American basil

American basil is also known as lemon basil. The leaves of this plant resemble basil, but are somewhat lighter in colour and more pointed. It is characterised by a nice fresh lemon aroma. Thanks to the lemon scent, this herb also repels insects.

Preparation & storage
Storage
Place the plant in a bright spot, but not in full sun. Keep the plant's soil moist, but not too wet. Water the plant daily (not on the leaves).
Never store American basil sprigs in the fridge, they will turn black.
Loose leaves can be kept in a sealed bag or container in the crisper section of the fridge for a few days. In the freezer, you can keep basil in a tightly sealed plastic bag for up to 12 months.
Preparation
Do not chop the leaves finely, but rather tear or cut them. This improves the flavour.
Add them at the end of the cooking time of the dish. If heated for a long time, this herb loses its flavour.
