Blackcurrants

The blackcurrant is dark purple to almost black. It is precisely this dark colour that makes it a super-healthy fruit, as the colouring is also a good antioxidant. Blackcurrants are very high in vitamin C. The berries have a spicy flavour. Some people find this berry a bit sour and tart. Many blackcurrants are therefore used for jams and jellies. It is best to store blackcurrants in the fridge.

Preparation & storage

    Storage
Blackcurrants should preferably be stored in a paper bag in the fridge. You can also store blackcurrants spread out on a plate in the fridge. Make sure they do not get damp. If necessary, lay the blackcurrants on kitchen paper to absorb moisture.

You can keep blackcurrants in the fridge for 1-3 days.

You can also freeze blackcurrants: lay the blackcurrants side by side on a flat plate and let them freeze. Then wrap them in a plastic container or freezer bag and put them back in the freezer. In the freezer (at - 18°C), blackcurrants can be kept for a few months.

How do I know if the blackcurrants are no longer good? The blackcurrants are mouldy or limp. You can recognise decay by looking, smelling or tasting carefully.
