Strawberry

Who doesn't love strawberries? This popular soft fruit is nicknamed the summer bunny; in fact, Dutch strawberries are widely available during the summer months. The strawberry is a false fruit; the small seeds on the outside are the actual fruit. When ripe, they are deep red in colour and have a sweet taste. Strawberries are packed with vitamin C. They also contribute to folic acid intake and are low in calories.

Preparation & storage
Storage
Strawberries are very fragile. Remove the strawberries from the box after purchase. Place them on a plate to prevent bruising. Make sure the strawberries do not get damp. If necessary, put them on kitchen paper. Do not cover the strawberries and store them with their crowns on, they will keep longer.
Freeze: let the strawberries freeze, spread out on a plate. Then pack them in a container and put them back in the freezer.
How do I know if strawberries are no longer good? The strawberries are then mouldy or limp. You can quickly recognise spoilage by looking, smelling or tasting.
Preparation
It is best to take strawberries out of the fridge an hour in advance. This is the best way to get the best flavour.
Storage times
Frozen: 8-12 months
Refrigerator: 1-3 days
Fruit bowl: 1 day
Cleaning strawberries
Carefully wash the strawberries in a bowl under running water. This is because they quickly become waterlogged. Do not hold the strawberries directly under the running tap, as this may bruise them. Only remove the crowns after washing.
