In the Netherlands, sweet onions are increasingly popular. Sweet onions, or sweet onions, have a milder and sweeter taste than the ordinary onion. As a result, children will appreciate this onion faster. Another advantage: sweet onions have a lower content of the 'prickly substance' pyruvic acid than ordinary onions. You can therefore process them without tearing eyes. It is best to store sweet onions in a cool place.

Preparation & storage

    Storage
Store onions in a cool (12-15°C), dark and dry place outside the fridge. This way, onions can be kept for a few weeks.

Do not store onions next to potatoes. The onions absorb moisture from the potatoes, making them more likely to rot.

Do you have half a sweet onion left over? Then cover the cut surface with cling film or put it in a storage container with a lid in the fridge.

You can also freeze sweet onions. Just blanch (heat briefly) just before freezing. In a tightly sealed plastic bag or container, you can store sweet onion pieces in the freezer for up to 3 months at a minimum of -18°C.

How do I know if a sweet onion is no longer good? If the sweet onion is rotten, discoloured or dried out. You can quickly recognise this decay by smelling, looking or tasting.

Do you have any leftover fried sweet onions? Then you can keep this in the fridge for 2 days or in the freezer for 3 months.

Pre-cut sweet onions spread a sour smell, become limp or mouldy. You can quickly recognise this decay by smelling, looking or tasting.

    Preparing
Remove the outer skin. Then cut the sweet onion into rings or pieces. It is better not to chop a sweet onion too finely, as this gives it a bitter taste. For the same reason, it is better to chop sweet onions only just before use.

Sweet onions have a lower pyruvic acid content than normal onions. The advantage: you can therefore process them without tearing eyes.
