The black zapote is bright green, shiny and spherical. It is the fruit of an evergreen tree. The black zapote is related to the better-known persimmon. During the ripening process, the skin turns olive green and then dark green with brown speckles. The flesh is shiny, brown to almost black, soft, juicy and tastes sweet-nutty.

An unripe black zapote can be stored outside the fridge. A ripe black zapote can be kept in the fridge for several days.
How do you know if the black zapote is ripe? The black zapote will give a little more when you press the fruit lightly.
