They look like lanterns or beautifully wrapped chocolates. But don't be confused; they are fruit! The Cape gooseberry consists of a yellow, edible berry. The berry grows in a lantern-like, transparent shell. The fruit is also called pineapple cherry, golden berry or physalis. The flavour is sweet and sour and somewhat similar to pineapple. It is best to store ripe gooseberries in a cool place.

Preparation & storage

    Storage
Unripe berries ripen well at room temperature. Store ripe berries in a cool place, but not in the fridge.

You can also freeze them: place the Cape gooseberries side by side on a flat plate and let them freeze. Then wrap them in a plastic container or freezer bag and put them back in the freezer. In the freezer (at -18°C), the berries can be kept for a few months.

How do I know if Cape gooseberries are no longer good? The berries are mouldy or limp. You can quickly recognise this decay by looking, smelling or tasting.

    Preparation
You can leave the berries whole or halve them.

Although a green berry is not ripe, it can still be eaten. The flavour will be more sour. Unripe berries become less sour if you prick the berry, sprinkle it with some sweetener and leave it like this for an hour.

    Storage times

    Fruit bowl: 2 days
    Freezer: 8-12 months

    Cleaning the Cape gooseberry

Wash the berries before use. Only remove the stalk and lamprey after washing.
