Garlic chives

Garlic chives are also known as Chinese chives. The plant has a strong garlic smell. Only the snow-white flower heads that appear in summer smell surprisingly sweet. The flavour is not as strong as garlic. An ideal herb for people who like a mild flavour! Use the young stems with leaves just like spring or spring onions. Garlic chives are best stored in a cool, dark and dry place outside the fridge.
Preparation & storage
Storage
Store garlic chives in a cool, dark and dry place outside the fridge. It will keep for a week this way.
Preparation
Use the young stems with leaves in the same way as spring or spring onions.
Cut off the bottom. Also remove the very last part of the greenery and any outer yellowing. Then wash the leaves.
Only add the garlic chives to a hot dish at the very end. Deep-frying, stir-frying and cooking make the leaves limp and much of the flavour is lost.
Do not eat the flower stalks with unopened buds raw, they are usually steamed or stir-fried.
