The Habanero ('from Havana' in Spanish) is one of the hottest peppers in the world. It is a firm pepper in red, yellow, brown or orange colours; all very spicy. This spicy chilli pepper is related to the Madame Jeanet, Trinidad Scorpion and the Carolina Reaper. The Habanero pepper is similar in appearance to a mini pepper, but don't confuse the two; after a big bite, your mouth will be on fire for hours.

Preparation & storage

    Storage
Habenero chillies stay good longer if you store them properly. Jalapeño peppers are best stored in the crisper section of the fridge at a temperature of between 8 and 10 degrees.

You can also freeze the pepper just fine. The flavour will not be lost this way.

How do I know if the pepper is no longer good? The pepper gives off a sour smell, becomes limp or mouldy. You can quickly recognise this decay by looking or smelling.

    Preparation
Habanero chillies are very spicy and therefore ideal

    • in a curry
    • in stews
    • through stir-fried vegetables
    • in combination with tropical fruit

The seeds and seeds of chillies are the sharpest and spiciest. You can remove these before using.

Cut the pepper with a sharp knife and avoid touching it with your hands. Don't rub your eyes after slicing pepper!

    Cleaning Habanero chillies

Wash the Habanero pepper, chop finely and add to your dish.
Tip: rub your hands with a little oil before chopping a pepper; this way, the spiciness of the pepper will be less absorbed by your hands.

To avoid irritation, wash your hands with soap after preparing the Habanero pepper.
