Head lettuce

Head lettuce is a traditional and familiar lettuce. Head lettuce is in season from May to October. It is best stored in the fridge. In recent years, many types of lettuce have been added. Inventive Dutch market gardeners look for ways to surprise consumers with new varieties. These include iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, oak leaf lettuce, lollo rosso, rocket and little gem.

Preparation & storage

    Storage
Store lettuce in the crisper section of the fridge. The lettuce will then keep for 2-3 days.

Make sure the lettuce can breathe. Do you put lettuce in a plastic bag yourself? Don't put it away in a closed plastic bag. You can store the lettuce in an open plastic bag if necessary. Or store lettuce in a damp tea towel and cut a slice off the bottom and put it in a bowl of water.

In a warm place, lettuce quickly becomes limp. Never store lettuce next to fruit, as the gas ethylene (formerly known as ethylene) is released when fruit ripens. Ethylene causes brownish-red spots on the veins of lettuce, lettuce then spoils faster.

If (pre-cut) lettuce or in a mix with other lettuces is offered packed, check the best-before date. Store wrapped lettuce in original packaging in the refrigerator. This lettuce is packed under protective atmosphere*.

*Protective atmosphere: This means that there are the same gases in the packaging as in the air, only in different proportions. This keeps products good for longer.

How do I know the lettuce is no longer good?

The lettuce goes mouldy or has wilted. You can recognise this decay by smelling, looking or tasting.

    Prepare
After washing, you can tear the leaves into pieces. Mix a dressing through them just before serving.

Has the quality deteriorated a little?
Cut off the stalk and place the lettuce in a bowl with water and ice cubes. Remove the outer leaves before use. Detach the leaves, wash them and dry them in a salad spinner or with a clean cloth. Pick the leaves into small pieces.

    Storage times

    Refrigerator: 2-3 days

    Preparation times

None, lettuce is usually eaten raw.

If you still want to prepare the lettuce, you can use these preparation times:
    Cooking: 4 - 6 minutes
    Microwave oven: 5 - 7 minutes
    Braising: 6 - 7 minutes
    Steaming: approx. 10 minutes

    Cleaning lettuce

Wash lettuce well in plenty of water and drain in a colander. You can also use a salad spinner to drain. With this, you can crank out all the moisture.
