Hyssop

Hyssop originated in the Middle East. The Romans ensured its worldwide spread. Literally, the name means 'sacred herb'. In Egypt and Greece, the herb was touted for its purifying properties. It was added to bath water in Roman bath houses; it was said to protect against leprosy. Because of its blue-purple colour, hyssop is also popular as a garden plant.
