Tamarillo

The tamarillo gets its name from an amalgamation of the words 'Tama' (Leadership in Maori) and 'amarillo' (yellow in Spanish). This fruit vegetable is also known as tree tomato. The fruit is oval-shaped and yellow or red in colour. The tamarillo has a slightly sweet and intense flavour, the skin is quite bitter and is therefore not usually eaten.

Preparation & storage
Store
Tamarillo is a fruit vegetable, just like other tomatoes. You store fruit vegetables outside the fridge.
Preferably keep the tamarillo in a cool place (12°C). The flavour then comes out best. You can then store the tamarillo for up to a week.
Why not in the fridge? It disrupts the ripening process. Another reason not to keep tamarillo in the fridge: they lose their delicious aroma.
Tamarillos that have been blanched for about 1 minute can be kept in a tightly sealed plastic container in the freezer for up to 12 months, at a minimum of -18°C. But fresh they are best!
How do I know if tamarillos are no longer good? The tamarillos are mouldy, have a sour smell or are limp. You can quickly recognise this decay by looking, smelling or tasting.
Preparation
Wash the tamarillo. Peel the tamarillo like an apple or peel it like a tomato.
This is how to peel the tamarillo:
- Pour boiling water over it.
- Quickly quench the tamarillo in cold water. The skin is now easy to peel off.
Then cut out the stem end with a sharp knife. Then cut the tamarillo into cubes or slices.
