Roma tomatoes

Roma tomatoes are also known as plum or pomodori tomatoes. Pomodori literally means 'golden apples'. An unusual name. What is at least as special? The elongated shape, firm flesh and colour of this tomato variety. Roma tomatoes have a full flavour. They are delicious as a base in tomato soup and pasta sauces.

Preparation & storage
Storage
Preferably store roma tomatoes in a cool place (12°C). The flavour then comes out best. You can then store them for up to a week.
Do not store rump tomatoes in the refrigerator, as this disrupts the ripening process. Another reason not to keep them in the fridge is that they lose their delicious flavour.
Store heirloom tomatoes on the vine at a slightly higher temperature. This prevents the tomatoes from detaching from the vine too early.
Tomatoes that have been blanched for about 1 minute can be stored in a tightly sealed plastic container in the freezer for up to 12 months at a minimum of -18°C. But fresh they are best!
How do I know if roma tomatoes are no longer good? The tomatoes go mouldy, have a sour smell or become limp. You can quickly recognise this deterioration by looking, smelling or tasting.
Preparation
The Roma tomato is very easy to prepare. Just wash it and you can eat it on the spot, or slice it on a sandwich or in a salad, the possibilities are endless.
Want to remove the skin? Then cut into the bottom of the tomato with a knife. Submerge the tomato briefly in boiling water and then immediately in cold water. Then you can easily remove the skin.
