A healthy start to the day!

5 November 2026

The alarm goes off, school bags are packed and everyone gets ready for a new day. But before the hustle and bustle begins, there’s one moment that deserves special attention: breakfast! From 9 to 13 November 2026, the Netherlands will be celebrating National School Breakfast Week. A great opportunity to reflect on the importance of a healthy breakfast. And did you know that adding a little fruit or veg can easily make your breakfast tastier and healthier?

A healthy start to the day!

Why is breakfast so important?

After a night’s sleep, your body could do with some fresh energy. A healthy breakfast provides important nutrients, such as fibre, vitamins and minerals. This ensures you’re well prepared for a day full of learning, working and playing.

During National School Breakfast Week, children discover just how tasty and important a healthy breakfast can be. But why wait until Breakfast Week? You can start trying out new breakfast ideas at home right now. By adding fruit and vegetables, you can turn an ordinary breakfast into something special.

Breakfast with fruit and vegetables

Fruit and veg might not be the first things that spring to mind at breakfast, but they go perfectly with it! A handful of berries stirred into yoghurt, slices of pear with porridge or an apple in a breakfast bowl: these are small additions that add extra flavour and nutrients. Why not give the recipes below a go?

1. Overnight oats with fruit: easy for busy mornings

No time to spend ages in the kitchen in the morning? Then overnight oats are ideal! You can prepare this breakfast the night before by mixing oats with milk and leaving it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, add yoghurt, your favourite fruit and some nuts, and your breakfast is ready.

With 75 grams of fruit per person, you’ll start the day on a colourful note. Try varying it with apple, pear or berries, for example.

2. Apple pie smoothie bowl: a morning treat

Who says apple pie is only for with a cup of coffee? With an apple pie smoothie bowl, you can bring the familiar taste of apple and cinnamon to the breakfast table. A delicious combination of fruit, oats and nuts that makes for a surprising start to the day.

Extra fun: let the children help add the toppings themselves. That way, breakfast isn’t just tasty, but also a cosy moment together.

3. Veggie smoothie: fruit and veg in one bowl

Vegetables for breakfast? Absolutely! This vegetable-packed smoothie is a colourful way to start the day. The combination of spinach, avocado, banana and orange makes for a deliciously creamy breakfast. And the best bit is: you’re getting your daily dose of fruit and veg straight away!

The smoothie is ready in 10 minutes. Serve it in a bowl with some granola or fresh fruit, such as blueberries, for an extra festive breakfast. A fun way to introduce children to vegetables in the morning!

Make breakfast a cosy time

A healthy breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated at all. With a bit of preparation and some extra fruit or veg, you’ll go a long way. For example, let children choose which fruit they want in their yoghurt, or prepare breakfast together the night before.

The National School Breakfast initiative shows just how important and enjoyable having breakfast together can be. So why not use the coming week to discover new flavours and make healthy breakfast habits part of your morning routine? Because a good start to the day begins at the breakfast table.
