Turnip is often confused with turnip, but they are two different plant roots. Turnip has a rough, greenish-yellow skin. Turnip is always eaten boiled or stewed. The yellow, fragrant flesh then has a mild, sweet and particularly aromatic flavour. It is rich in vitamins, as are several other types of cabbage. On the fruit tray, you can keep kohlrabi for up to 6 weeks. Dutch kohlrabi is in season from October to March.

Preparation & storage

    Storage
On the fruit bowl, kohlrabi can be kept for up to 6 weeks. In the fridge, you can keep kohlrabi for 5 weeks.

A cut turnip will keep in the fridge. You can wrap it in cling film or put it in a sealed storage container.

Raw kohlrabi can be kept in the freezer (at a minimum of -18°C) for up to 12 months. Blanch the turnip briefly for 2-4 minutes before freezing. You can then store the turnip in a tightly sealed plastic bag or container.

Do you have any leftover cooked turnip? Then you can keep it in the freezer for 3 months.

How can I tell if rutabaga is no longer good? Pre-cut swedes smell sour, become limp or mouldy. You can quickly recognise decay by smelling, looking or tasting.

    Preparing
Cut the turnip into slices before use. Peel the slices and cut them into cubes.

Cook fresh turnips in a little water for 20 minutes. Then drain the turnip and season with nutmeg or with a small spoonful of honey and a little liquid margarine or dash of oil.
