Melon

The melon is related to the cucumber and is actually not a fruit, but a vegetable. Melons interbreed well with other varieties, so there is a huge variety on sale such as the watermelon, cantaloupe and galia melon. All melons taste sweet, but they all have slightly different flavours.
Preparation & storage
Storage
Do not store melons in the fridge as the cold interferes with their post-ripening process.
Watermelons actually taste good when they come out of the fridge and are eaten cold. Pieces and segments of melon should be kept in the fridge, but wrap them in cling film or aluminium foil.
Bear in mind that melons give off a strong, sweet smell, milk products can easily absorb this. In the freezer, melon pieces can be kept for up to 12 months at a minimum of -18ºC.
Preparation
Melon with ham is a classic recipe for a reason. Cut the melon into wedges and serve with (raw) ham on a nice small plate as a starter. You can also serve the melon slices on wholemeal bread with a slice of ham.
You can also hollow out a (galia) melon and fill it with a summer soft fruit salad. Or incorporate the melon into a salad with lettuce or frisee and unsalted nuts.
Melon can also be eaten for breakfast, pureed in smoothies. Or as a garnish for your dessert, mixed with sorbet ice cream, low-fat/semi-skimmed quark or yoghurt.
