Watermelon

The dark green watermelon lives up to its name: it consists of no less than 95% water! Yet its pink to deep red flesh is also high in iron, vitamin C and lycopene. One difference from other melons? The seeds are not in the middle together, but scattered in the flesh. Chilled, watermelon is a delicious thirst quencher. Watermelon is best stored in the fridge.
Preparation & storage
Preparing and cleaning watermelon
Wash the melon before use. Halve the melon and cut slices from it. Squeeze the watermelon like this. Or cut the flesh loose from the skin. If necessary, cut the slices into pieces.
Preparation times
None, you usually eat the melon raw. Several recipes with watermelon can be found on Veggipedia.
Storing watermelon
Unlike other melons, you store watermelon in the fridge. In fact, watermelon is at its tastiest when chilled!
Store sliced watermelon (pieces or slices) in the fridge too. Then wrap them in aluminium foil or plastic film. They will then keep for a maximum of 3 days.
Bear in mind that melons give off a strong, sweet odour. Milk products can easily absorb this.
Watermelon can also be frozen. In the freezer, melons can be kept for up to 12 months at a minimum of -18°C.
