Kale: so much more than just stamppot!

A real autumn favourite

With its firm, curly leaves, kale is a striking sight. It’s no coincidence that the French call this vegetable ‘chou frisée’, or curly cabbage. Kale is a familiar sight in Dutch cuisine and is perfect for autumn.

When buying fresh kale, it’s worth checking the colour. Fresh, bright green leaves are a sign of good quality. Kale is also available pre-cut or frozen. Handy when you want to whip up something tasty in a hurry.

How to prepare kale

Are you going to cook with fresh kale yourself? First, remove the leaves from the stalk and cut away the thick stalks. Wash the leaves thoroughly and then chop them into pieces.

Kale can be prepared in various ways. Boiling takes about 15 to 20 minutes and stir-frying about 15 minutes. Bear in mind that kale shrinks during cooking.

Kale on the table: try something different

Of course, kale stew remains a true classic. But did you know that you can also stir-fry kale, use it in a salad or even turn it into a crunchy snack? With these recipes, you’ll discover new ways to enjoy kale.

1. Kale and tofu scramble with toast

Kale for lunch? Absolutely! In this dish, you combine kale with tofu, red onion and Italian herbs on toasted wholemeal sourdough bread. A surprising way to add extra vegetables to your lunch.

2. Kale with vegetarian strips and mushrooms

Fancy a warming meal? Combine kale with vegetarian strips, mushrooms, onion and garlic. Delicious with mashed potato and ideal for an autumn evening.

3. Kale crisps

Who says crisps always have to be made from potatoes? With kale, a little olive oil and herbs, you can make a surprisingly crunchy snack in the oven. Great to try during a cosy evening on the sofa!
