Figs

Figs come in many different colours. Figs are sweet and aromatic. Very fresh figs can be eaten with their skin. In the Netherlands, figs usually come from southern Europe. You can also harvest figs in the Netherlands. But then the fig tree should be in a sheltered place. Plant a fig tree yourself if you have room for one in the garden. Figs are best kept in the fridge.
Preparation & storage
Storage
Fresh figs store in the fridge. Eat the figs quickly once you have bought them. They will keep for a maximum of 5 days in the fridge.
Fresh figs can also be frozen. Fresh figs can be kept in the freezer for up to 9 months (-18°C).
How do I know if fresh figs are no longer good? The figs are mouldy or feel limp. You can recognise this decay by using your senses: look, feel or smell.
An opened pack of dried figs can be kept in the pantry for 6-9 months. Is it a closed pack? Then keep to the best-before date on the packaging.
Preparation
Very fresh figs can be eaten with their skin. Make sure the skin stays whole, otherwise water will get into the fruit and that is not tasty.
If the figs are less fresh, you can also peel them. Cut the fruit lengthwise into quarters. Peel the fruit, pulling the skin off the fruit from the top (the thin part) downwards. The insides of the fruit will now come off and you will have nice wedges of fig flesh.
Are these dried figs? You can eat them straight away or further process the figs in a dish.
