Mango

The mango is one of the oldest known fruits. There are more than a thousand varieties of mangoes. The ripe flesh is soft and juicy, light orange in colour and fibrous. The fruit tastes fresh-sweet and emits a sweet fragrance. The woody, flattened stone seed is firmly attached to the flesh and is not edible. It is best to store mango on the fruit shelf.
Preparation & storage
Cutting a mango
This short film from the EU School Fruit and Vegetable Programme shows you how to cut a mango in a fun and easy way.
Storing mangoes
Mango should be stored at room temperature to allow them to ripen properly. So avoid storing mangoes in the fridge. You can keep ripe mangoes in a cool place for a few days, preferably at 8 to 10 ºC.
Avoid storing the fruit with strong-smelling products, as it easily absorbs other smells. In a well-sealed plastic bag or container, you can store mango pieces in the freezer at a minimum of -18ºC for up to 12 months.
Mango preparation
You can actually eat mango all day long: for breakfast, lunch, dinner and as a snack. Start your day with a nutritious and refreshing mango smoothie or a fruit salad with pineapple, orange, banana and grated coconut.
Or have a mango with lunch. A piece of mango on a sandwich with chicken breast or in a salad with iceberg lettuce and prawns. In the evening, you can serve the mango with a starter with (raw) ham or use it in tropical rice dishes.
You can also use the mango for dessert, of course; in cakes, with sorbet ice cream or in a delicious mango cream. Use unripe or dried mango if you want to make mango chutney.
