Split peas

Split peas are legumes. Split peas are available in green and yellow varieties. The green split pea is best known for its use in pea soup. The split pea is obtained from the dried round green pea. The seed coat is removed, so the pea breaks into two halves. Such a skinless pea is of course perfect for (pea) soup.
Preparation & storage
Storing split peas
Store split peas in a cool, dry and dark place. For example, in a kitchen cupboard or larder. Has the packaging been opened? Then you can store the split peas for at least a year. Is the packaging closed? Then follow the storage advice and best-before date on the packaging.
Do you have any leftover cooked split peas? Cool the leftover quickly first. Then put the cooked split peas in a sealable storage container. You can then store the split peas for another 2 days in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer.
Cleaning/preparing split peas
You do not need to soak split peas, as the skin is removed, you can use the split peas right away. Just wash in a colander and boil in clean water. On average, split peas should be cooked for 1-2 hours on low heat with the lid on the pan. For the exact cooking time, follow the cooking instructions on the packaging.
