Tomato

There are as many as 60 varieties of tomatoes. The beef tomato is the best known. You also have the vine tomato, cream tomato, cherry tomato and 'Coeur de Boeuf'. Nowadays, there are even candy tomatoes grown especially for children. They are often just a little sweeter and delicious as a healthy snack! Besides being delicious, tomatoes are healthy, partly because they are rich in the antioxidant lycopene. Tomatoes are best stored in a cool place, but not in the fridge.
Preparation & storage
Storage
Store tomatoes in a cool place. Do not store tomatoes in the fridge, as this disrupts the ripening process. They will keep for about 1 week.
Another reason not to keep them in the fridge, as they will lose their flavour.
Tomatoes that have been blanched for about 1 minute can be kept in a well-sealed plastic container in the freezer for up to 12 months, at a minimum of -18°C. But fresh they are best!
How do I know if tomatoes are no longer good? The tomatoes are mouldy, have a sour smell or are limp. You can quickly recognise this decay by looking, smelling or tasting.
Preparing
Wash the tomato. You can eat it on the spot. Slices on a wholemeal sandwich or in a salad are also delicious.
Do you want to remove the skin? Cross the bottom of the tomato with a knife and immerse it briefly in boiling water and then immediately in cold water. Then you can remove the skin in no time!
For a dish with diced tomatoes, cut the tomato and remove the seeds and juice.
