Meat tomatoes belong to the fruit vegetables and have an authentic ribbed shape. Meat tomatoes have a firm texture. Meat tomatoes contain few or no seeds. The flavour is slightly sweet and fresh. When cooked, they keep their shape. Therefore, meat tomatoes are very suitable for oven dishes or for the barbecue.

Preparation & storage

    Store
Meat tomato is a fruit vegetable, just like all tomatoes. You store fruit vegetables outside the fridge.

Preferably store the beef tomato in a cool place (12°C). The flavour is at its best then. You can then store the beef tomato for up to a week.

Why not in the fridge? It disrupts the ripening process. Another reason not to keep beef tomatoes in the fridge: they lose their delicious flavour.

Meat tomatoes that have been blanched for about 1 minute can be kept in a tightly sealed plastic container in the freezer for up to 12 months at a minimum of -18°C. But fresh they are best!

How do I know if a beef tomato is no longer good? The beef tomato is mouldy, has a sour smell or is limp. You can quickly recognise this decay by looking, smelling or tasting.

    Preparation
Wash the beef tomato. You can eat it on the spot. Slices on a wholemeal sandwich or in a salad are also delicious.

Do you want to remove the skin? Then cut into the bottom of the meat tomato with a knife. Submerge the meat tomato briefly in boiling water and then immediately in cold water. Then you can easily remove the skin.

For a dish with diced meat tomatoes, cut the meat tomato and remove the seeds and juice. Tip: don't throw away the seeds and juice! You can make tomato water from it, nice and refreshing.
