Celebrate King's Day in style with orange fruit and vegetables

24 April 2025

King's Day (this year on 26 April) is just around the corner, and that means parties, free markets, music and of course.... orange! Whether you go for a stroll through town, celebrate at home or prepare for an orange-tinged party: make your snacks and dishes shine as royally as your outfit. And what better way to do that than with orange fruit and vegetables? Healthy, festive and totally in style!

Celebrate King's Day in style with orange fruit and vegetables

Here are our favourite orange powerfoods that perfectly suit the mood of King's Day:

1. Carrots

Carrots are perhaps the best-known orange vegetable, but that certainly doesn't make them boring. Sliced raw, they are perfect as a crunchy snack, but you can also roast them in the oven with some honey and thyme for a sweet, savoury treat. Or how about a fresh carrot salad with black sesame seeds? You'll conjure up a colourful side dish in no time.

2. Orange pepper

These bright orange peppers are not only pleasing to the eye, but also deliciously sweet in flavour. They are rich in vitamin C and perfect to eat raw, for example in strips with a fresh yoghurt dip. But they are also ideal for filling! For example, make orange peppers stuffed with couscous, feta and fresh herbs, or sauté them briefly with a little olive oil and garlic for a simple but tasty vegetable dish.

3. Sweet potato

The sweet potato, or sweet potato, is a versatile tuber that is easy to incorporate into all kinds of dishes. It is rich in fibre, vitamin A and complex carbohydrates - perfect as a source of energy for a busy King's Day. Cut into fries, season with paprika and roast in the oven for a healthier alternative to chips. Or make a creamy puree of it as a base for a colourful stew with spinach and sun-dried tomatoes. Even in baked goods like muffins or brownies, the sweet potato surprisingly comes into its own!

4. Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a vegetable you can vary endlessly with. It has a mild, slightly sweet flavour and a beautiful deep orange colour that perfectly suits the festive King's Day vibe. Turn it into a creamy pumpkin soup with ginger and coconut milk, or roast cubes of pumpkin in the oven with cumin and cinnamon as a side dish.

5. Orange

The orange is the perfect fruity refresher during a long King's Day. Packed with vitamin C and deliciously juicy, it is ideal for eating on the go or adding segments to a salad with fennel, olives and red onion. Make a sparkling mocktail with sparkling water, mint and a hint of ginger, or use the juice in a dressing or marinade. This will give any dish a fresh, royal touch.

Tip: make an orange plank!

Want to really impress during your King's Day celebrations? Put together a festive drinks board full of orange delicacies. Think snack carrots, strips of sweet pepper, cubes of sweet potato (possibly lightly roasted), slices of mango, orange segments and cubes of cantaloupe melon. Serve with an orange hummus, e.g. pumpkin-based or roasted paprika. Add some toasts or crackers and you have a healthy, colourful and royal snack board to feast on.
