Grapefruits are large, round citrus fruits with white, pale pink or dark pink flesh. This fruit probably once originated from a cross between an orange and grapefruit. Grapefruits are one of the largest citrus fruits. The redder the flesh, the sweeter the taste. Grapefruits are high in dietary fibre and vitamin C.

Preparation & storage

    Storage
    Store grapefruits outside the fridge, but in a cool place (12-15°C) or on the fruit shelf. After picking, grapefruits do not ripen. You can store them for up to 2 weeks.

    How do I know if the grapefruit is no longer good? The grapefruit then goes mouldy, is dehydrated and has lost flavour. You can quickly recognise this decay by smelling, looking or even tasting.

    Preparation
    The skin of a grapefruit is quite firm and less tasty to eat. It is best to cut the grapefruit in half. Then scoop out the flesh. Don't mind the skin? Then you can also cut the grapefruit into segments and eat it like an orange.

    Medical
    Grapefruit (juice) affects the breakdown of some medicines. Do you use medication? Check that grapefruit has no effect on these. In doubt? Then ask your pharmacist or GP.
