Pears are closely related to apples. You can divide pears into two categories: hand pears and stewing pears. The hand pear has juicy flesh. Delicious to eat out of your hand! Stew pears are hard and drier. They are delicious for stewing or for use in compotes. Most pears are homegrown and of top quality.

Preparation & storage
Storage
Unripe pears can ripen just fine on a fruit tray at room temperature. They will then become progressively softer and more tender.
Do you like a firm pear? Then keep them in the fridge.
Ripe pears can also be kept in the fridge. They will keep for a few days there.
Stew pears will keep for a few weeks in a cool place.
How do I know if the pear is no longer good? The pear is mouldy. You can quickly recognise decay by looking, smelling or tasting.
Preparation
Wash a pear well or peel it before use. You can also eat the pear out of your hand with its peel. Or halve the pear and cut the halves in half again lengthwise. Then remove the core.
Good to know: peeled pears brown quickly! You can prevent this by sprinkling them with some lemon juice.
You can remove the skin, but sometimes it is nicer to leave it on, especially when preparing the pear. For use in dishes, the Conference pear is very suitable.
Slices of pear with skin in a salad provide a crunchy bite. The green colour also makes for a colourful decoration on your plate.
