Pineapple is a tropical fruit that weighs about 1 to 2 kilos. A ripe pineapple smells and tastes deliciously sweet. Pineapples are picked as good as ripe because the fruit hardly ripens at all.

Preparation & storage

Want to know more about pineapple? Then read all about pineapple on Veggipedia.

    Storing pineapples

The pineapple is a tropical fruit that does not like low temperatures. So don't keep it in the fridge, but in a cool place or on the fruit bowl.

In a well-sealed plastic bag or container, you can store pineapple chunks in the freezer (at a minimum of -18°C) for up to 12 months.

    Storage times

    Cool place: 3-7 days
    Deep-freeze: 12 months

    Cut pineapple

Place the pineapple on a cutting board and cut off the bottom and top. Put the pineapple upright and then cut off the skin with a wide margin. You can choose to cut the pineapple into slices and then cut out the hard inside. Or cut the pineapple lengthwise into quarters and then cut the segments into pieces. Also check out the video 'How to cut a pineapple'.

There are also special pineapple peelers that allow you to peel the fruit in one move.

    Preparing pineapples

You can cook pineapple. Tip: raw pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain that breaks down proteins. This makes milk products with fresh pineapple watery and gelatine not stiff. So for mousses and puddings, use canned pineapple or boil pineapple for a few minutes first.

You can also grill pineapple (on the bbq).
